Senate Bill 955: Absences for Students Participating in Civic or Political Events

Have you updated your excused student absence codes? If you haven’t, please be aware that starting January 1, 2023, SB 955 allows a student to be excused from school to participate in a civic or political event, provided that the student notifies the school ahead of the absence.

A “civic or political event” includes but is not limited to: Voting, poll working, strikes, public commenting, candidate speeches, political or civic forums, and town halls.

It’s important to point out that this absence only applies to middle and high school students. While the new law states that the student can only be excused for one schoolday-long absence per year, SB 955 also allows students to be excused for additional absences at the discretion of the school administrator.
