SI&A

Expert Presenters. Important topics. Virtual sessions you can’t miss!

You do not want to miss virtual CSBA conference this week. SI&A will be hosting two breakout sessions talking about the record breaking levels of chronic absenteeism across the state and sharing how districts are handling the crisis.

Our first session entitled, “Pandemic Pushout: Closing Equity Gaps Widened by Closures,” brings together David Kopperud, chairperson of the State School Attendance Review Board from the California Department of Education, Dr. Tony Wold, former Associate Superintendent from West Contra Costa Unified, and myself. In this session, we discuss how CDE is supporting districts during this time in light of statewide enrollment and attendance drops. You’ll also hear how the West Contra Costa Unified SD is using their MTSS model leveraging data to connect with families, identify barriers to attendance and create a safe and culturally responsive school environment.

Our other session is entitled, “The Silent Plague in Small Districts: Overcoming Chronic Absenteeism.” This session highlights the leading edge work that Sierra Sands USD Superintendent, Dave Ostash and his team are doing to keep students engaged. You will hear how the district builds a collaborative relationship with parents to support their budget and student success.
