From Bad to Worse

This week, SI&A will present its updated student cohort data analysis for the first two months

of school at the request of the California Department of Education. The report provides a three year snapshot of attendance patterns and trends for over 325,000 students across the state. While we have been hearing hints and murmurs that things this school year have not “returned to normal” the data confirms that things are anything but.

Ongoing COVID exposure alerts and rolling classroom quarantines continue to disrupt district attempts to get back to pre-pandemic structure. Public school enrollment continues to plummet statewide and chronic absence rates soar to nearly 30%.

To get a full picture of how disrupted learning is impacting students and families, you can watch the live presentation this Thursday at CDE’s State SARB public meeting.
