I showed most of the cities in California. All the buildings show our environment. The recycling symbol is to encourage all California citizens to recycle."

Shannon A. 7th Grade

"My painting is hot air balloons. I chose hot air balloons because it represents how natural California is. Iam proud to be a Californian because we have almost all types of natural landscape that others don't. California isn't just a 'busy city' state. It has lots of nature too."

Mia T. 6th Grade

Mission Hill Middle School Santa Cruz City SD

Mia T. Art Thumbnail Gloves

Media: pastel

"First, I was going to draw something very realistic, but thought that it wouldn't be original enough. So I decided to do some impressionistic artwork. First, I drew the green and white crops that go across the page. Then I drew the grapes in the corner to represent vineyards. And lastly, the sun and the beach to show the sunny coast."

Jessica H. 6th Grade

Clayton B. Wire Elementary School Sacramento City USD

Jessica H. Art Thumbnail Proud to be a Californian

Media: colored pencil

"I'm proud of being a Californian because I can learn about many cultures and different diversities. Most of the classmates in my homeroom are from different cultures, yet most states don't have people from different countries. We are lucky that we live in a state that has a mixture of different people from different diversities. I'm also proud of being a Californian because of the foods that are produced fresh from farms. Also, I'm proud of being a Californian because of the trees that are grown in this state. I'm proud of the clean air and the wonderful ocean we live next to. There are different animals that we can enjoy at the zoo. In this state I can see people smile."

Gabrielle F. 7th Grade

Thurston Middle School Laguna Beach USD

Gabrielle F. Art Thumbnail Untitled

"The reason why I love California is because of the beach. That is why my painting is of the beach. The technique I used is watercolor. As I was doing this project I learned that watercolor can be very beautiful."

Antonio B. 5th Grade

Los Olivos Elementary School Los Olivos ESD

Antonio B. Art Thumbnail Little Red Schoolhouse

Media: colored pencill

"How did we get this far? With education. It's one, big part of our lives! Ballard School, also known as the Little Red Schoolhouse, has been around since 1882! That makes it the oldest school still in use in California! And in school, you play with your friends, exercise, and, of course, learn. So whether we're rock climbing, exploring, or acting, you should definitely thank education. That is why I'm proud to be a Californian."

Yun-mi C. 11th Grade Korean Exchange Student

Clearlake High School Lakeport USD

Yun-mi C. Art Thumbnail Glass Beach

Media: watercolor and tempura paint

"I think glass beach is a good place in California. I wanted to draw rocks, sea and beautiful stones. I painted the poster, I wanted to paint rocks with light and darkness, so I used black and white. I mixed them and added more and more white. The sea color had so many different colors because of depth so I used blue and white."

Menghong X. 11th Grade

Pacific Grove High School Pacific Grove USD

Menghong X. Art Thumbnail Our California

Media: colored pencil

"California, being one of the few states whose climate, vegetation, and landscape varies greatly, is very unique. Whether it is what the Inland Empire is famous for, or the difference in mountain shapes between the Shasta Cascade and the High Sierras. I'll always treasure the gifts we have in California."

Bianca F. 11th Grade

Pioneer High School Whittier UHSD

Bianca F. Art Thumbnail Welcome to California!

Media: colored pencil

"In creating my artwork I realized all that California has to offer. There is beautiful scenery, interesting history, and places for everyone to visit."

Kimberly A. 10th Grade

Clearlake High School Lakeport USD

Kimberly A. Art Thumbnail The Golden State

Media: pencill

"For my first real art drawing, I learned a lot and feared how to draw something. I wanted the lake to be darker, so I used a black pencil and colored softly. Then I noticed it was too dark so I had to erase the whole lake. It made the lake perfect color, I thought. I learned how to draw snow because I had no clue how to. I ended up drawing dark long spots on the different mountains and then taking a Q-Tip and blending it up in the white. This was a great challenge that I am willing to do again."
